For years I had a car with those seat belts that go around you automatically when the car is started. I have always just used the shoulder part of the belt because I'm short and have to sit close to steering wheel, and I couldn't reach the lap belt. I got a new car recently and it is very hard for me to reach back for the seatbelt ( it has the regular type of belts), so I leave it buckled all the time and then just pull the shoulder belt over me when I get in. Its kind of a hassle but it beats over extending myself trying to put the seatbelt on. Plus, I dont have the lap belt to dig into my tummy and wrinkle my clothes. Does anyone else do this?? My friends think i'm wierd cause they have never seen anyone do this, but they arent as short as me either! When they hassle me about not having a lap belt, I remind them that they never wore it in my old car, so whats the difference. Just wondering if anyone else has had the same problem and solved it this way.

I don't think it is weird, I think it is stupid. You did that in your other car - were you ever in a major accident in your other car? Your seat belt was not designed to be used that way - you are making yourself a crash test dummy. I am 5'2" and I manage to put my seatbelt on properly every time. My mom is 4'11" and she also wears her seatbelt properly every time. I hope your life is worth your unwrinkled clothes and reduced hassle.

Sounds like you are more worried about wrinkling your clothes than your safety. I'm 5'3 and thats pretty short and I still reach around and put my seatbelt on. The lap belt is there for a reason (like if you flip your car!) so you should definately use it. I don't think that its weird and you probably aren't the only person in the world who does this, but I would suggest wearing the lap belt for your own safety.

If you're not going to wear the lap belt, you would actually be safer not using a belt at all. In a collision, there would be nothing holding your hips in place and your shoulder belt would end up choking you or even snapping your neck. No matter how good of a driver you think you are, sometimes you just get hit without ever getting a chance to avoid an accident. My girlfriend is 5'0" and still manages to wear a seat belt... how tall are you?

My wife is 5' 0", and still uses the belt correctly. You're more concerned with wrinkles than your life.

Ever heard of "Social Darwinism"? It's the idea that, if people do stupid things and get themselves killed, only the smart ones live long enough to pass on their genes. Sort of like natural selection. A little chlorine in the gene pool.

Only idiots do that. The only problem you will "solve" is the payoff on your life insurance to your family when you are killed. but if you're not intelligent enough to use a seatbelt propertly, you're probably not bright enough to buy life insurance either. Hopefully your family won't become a burden on society when you "bite the big one."
