Do you have another date? It's only a prom, for God's sake, only a DATE. You're not marrying the guy. If I were him I don't think I would have the courage to ask again. Here is my take: why not have lunch with him one day..at the mall or something and get to know him better. If you still don't like him, tell him "no thank you" and fix him up with your girlfriend. You know, I think you'll be sorry if you don't go with him. You can have a good time with a date you only "kinda like". Just get it clear before you go: we both dance the first and last dance together, and we're free to socialize with whomever we want. In ten years, when he's a Senator, you'll be damned sorry you didn't go. The guy is crazy for you. AND...for every guy you pass up, you also pass an opportunity to "network". If you two don't "click", maybe he'll introduce to one of his friends that might be "the guy". It's called: FROG-KISSING! Godloveya.

If you say yes, you'll only be leading him on and making it even more awkward in the future. The best thing for you to do is to say, look we're friends and I can't even consider jeapordizing that to go on a date to prom that wouldn't be sincere. You're saving yoursef a lot of future stress and complications by being stern now and not letting things get out of hand.

Well, you don't have to say "yes" to him if you do not want to -- you have that right. But why not? You said the two of you were friends, so what's the reason?
As far as to how to refuse him, well, I think that matter is better left to you, but you might want to think of a good reason to give him when he asks "why".

Is there anyone you know who may be interested in going with him? If so you could lean him that way.
Are you seeing someone steady that you are going with? If so you tell him- "of course I have to go with XX but did you think about asking YY".

If someone else asked you than tell him your going with someone else, if not than go with him....it just might turn out to be better that the first one.

Maybe you could find another girl for him. Otherwise, just explain gently that he's a really good friend, but you already have a date.

Wow...that's pretty low. Is there anyone else asking you? If not, you should take him up on that offer, it could be a blast. Just think of how awful he will feel.

you should feel bad, you probably crushed his soul. he is probably one of the loser's asking a question on her about how to get his dream girl. but don't sweat the small things and don't worry about his feelings because when you care for others thats when you get burned.
