It sounds like this guy has an inflated ego. Perhaps you can see that it is a risk at an emotional level to involve yourself in his games because of his lack of self-esteem as a compatible candidate to be your friend first. One must gain trust as a friend before one can move on to the next level. Creating a strong foundation of trust is what you are aiming for. His bragging indicates that perhaps he wants more trust in his life. Surely you are decent and caring human being. Follow your rationality not your impulse to ask have this guy be involved in your life. You are in control of this situation until he can prove to you that he is trust worthy.
