I have a brother printer ,scanner and copier but Idon't understand the purpose of a scanner.

Scanner can make a printed photo into a digital image on the computer. Using the scanner in conjunction with an OCR program, the scanner can convert a written document (like a newspaper article) and convert it into a word processor document, as if you'r typed it in yourself.
Many AIO (all-in-one) machines can be used as copiers or to make faxes.

You can take documents and scan them to a file on your computer or to E-mail and send as an attachment.
