It's still used in some custom applications and point of sale terminals.

It's not used by end users for the most part anymore though and no longer is the backend of windows.

The general public is probably using Windows, but DOS is still used. Believe it or not I use it in a hospital. It is a 20-year-old tracking program which our technical crew is trying to rewrite with Access, but so far have not completed the job.

I worked with it for about 8 years in a university setting. It was all we had at the time so didn't think anything about it. We just set about learning the commands. When Windows and menus came out, we had to relearn everything we had been doing.

WindowsXP doesn't have a full version of DOS with it, like Windows98 and before did.

While DOS is seldom if ever used anymore it IS needed if you want to play any of your older games that were created for a DOS environment. To play those in WindowsXP though, you need to use an immulator like DOSBOX which does the trick nicely.

In conclusion, DOS in and of itself is pretty much a "dead horse".

Its half true. My lecturer is still using DOS on his computer (for some purpose but I never asked). We dont use DOS anymore. Imagine executing a program by typing in the MSDOS rather than double click on the file.

No, MS DOS is used only for specific commands. However it was replaced with "Windows". If you check though, you'll find the "Command Prompt" which is required for telling Windows to do certain things.

With Windows and Linux, I don't think anybody would ever dream of using DOS.
