We have two cats... what is my saying? Cats make the house smell like a f**king liter box. And guess what? It drives me insane because I refuse to invite anyone at the house because I am afraid that they might smell something that I may not have detected. The girl cat is annoying (she is supposedly mine), and she is always acting "weird". The boy cat is OK, but I think that the whole house would "smell" and feel better if they were gone. I liked my house way better when they weren't here... so, what can I do? I always mention "letting the cats go", but my mom gets all pissy at me.

There is no reason that the house needs to smell like a litterbox. There are litters that eliminate the smell as long as you keep the box clean. It sounds like things aren't being kept as well as they could be. I hate perfumy litters, so I use the type made of unscented silicone beads and scoop it regulalry and it only needs to be cleaned every few weeks. There is no smell in my house.and believe me, I'm picky.

You don't say why the girl cat is annoying but there even ways to work on cat behavior. Since the other two members of the household want to keep your pets, you need to work together to make it better for all of you.

Hello Sugar The basic fact is that if your mom and brother want the cats the cats are going to stay. So the best thing to do is make it as bearable for yourself as possible. Do you have money from allowance or a job that you can use to buy and choose their litter and litter box? If so get a self cleaning litter box ($79-99) and multicat scoopable type litter. When the cat uses the litter box there is a little rake that comes down and rakes the used litter into a sealed tube so it will niot stink. The tube is then emptied in the trash can outside or in a trashbag and immediately taken out - by you bec you are the one who hates the scent. The selfcleaning box is supposed to be odor free for a week so daily dumping the tube is overkill but it will probably make you feel beter. Get a product like oust too that destroys odors by taking the enzymes out of the air not just covers them up. You should not need it with the self cleaning box but it will probably make you feel better to have it.

Give your mom a gift of some pretty scented candles or potpourie or one of the machines that plays scented disks. Tell her with a grin that you are sorry you made a stink and want to make it up to her (Hey to get what you want accomplished the easiest way is with a bit of humor and humility)

Keep your door closed and window opened a crack and use scent rings on the light bulbs or even an air purifier so your own room is cat free.

There are or will be things you want and like that your mom and brother don't so earn a few tolerance points here. :)

Ease up on yourself a bit. If you have a real friend they will like you for you not for the fragrence of your home. Most teen girls and I am guessing that is your age group have things about their home and family that they are very sensitive about. This is the one you are focusing on right now and it is hard to deal with things not being the way you want them but your friends probably each have things they would like to change about their homes, and probably they are things you would never notice visiting them. It might help to think about the good things about your family sometimes too. Sometimes that makes the not so comfortable ones easier to tolerate. Once you have done all you can do trust your friends to be real friends unless you absolutely know they won't be and if they won't be then they aren't great friends. If you want to be extra sure everything smells OK just before they come over brew up a bit of water, some spices and some orange or lemon peel in the microwave, bring to a boil and then leave the micro door open a crack so the steam and scent drifts out around the kitchen and all the house. Spring is coming maybe you can be outside more with friends too and serve cokes or whatever at a pretty table under a sun umbrella - another gift you could give yourself and your family.

She should get all pissy at you. If you are afraid the house might smell from the litter box, then you be the one to clean it everyday. That way you know it is clean. If one of your friends come over and smell the cats, they will get over it. Some of your friends have cats, I bet. Are your cats fixed? If not you need to get them fixed, or you will end up with more cats. This may be the reason she acts weird. Why did you get cats if you did not want them. Cats depend on us to take care of them. If you are living under your moms roof, then you need to respect her wishes. Do not let the cats go. If you hate it that bad and don't give a crap about your precious cats, then move out. Maybe it would have been better to post this somewhere else besides in pets. It sounds like you don't care about them. That is a shame.

Ok, I live in a one bedroom condo with two cats. My place does not smell and we only clean out our litter like once a week. If your house smells that bad, then you and your family are not taking care of the litter boxes very well. Do you have a basement? You could always move the litter boxes down there, which would probably help with the smell, and make sure you clean them at least once a week if not more. I just cannot believe that two cats can stink up an entire house. If your mom and brother want the cats, then I'm sorry but you have to deal with it. If you don't like it, move out.

How bout instread of complaining and being a total brat, you clean the litter box every day and then the smell will be better and not so bad. If your whole house smells like a litterbox then your family is not cleaning them enough. If you dont want anything to do with them and you live at home, its not your choice. Also letting them go is not the answer, those cats didnt ask to have you as a house mate. They had to take it because they didnt have a choice. You mom and brother did that to you not the cats. Id hate to see what your attitude is like when you get older. You need to relax and calm down, if your friends were truely your friends they wouldnt care your house smelled slightly. If your so worried dont have anyone over, go to there house, the cats will feel better with you gone anyway.

So why don't you help your mom keep the litter box clean all the time? Scoop up the kity poop and change litter at least once a week. You can also ask your mom to buy a better litter that wil absorb litter smells better - buy a clumping scoopable one. Vaccum the house regularly to keep cat dander down to a minimum. You sound like a prissy spoiled brat to me and you have no thought for anyone but yourself. What if the rest of your family loves the cats? Does that mean nothing to you? Rememebr, what goes around, comes around and one day you will have a daughter who is just as prissy, ungrateful and selfish as you sound to be. Grow up.

I have two cats and my house does not smell at all becuase I clean their litter boxes fastidously (2 times a day), change it once a week and vacuum regularly. Oh, we entertai peole here at a regular basis too!

If you are embarrassed about your home, do more cleaning and tidying and help your mom.

If you clean the litter box more often (daily or twice a day) you wont even smell it. A Small Spaces type of litter also kills odor. Also consider an enclosed litter box, some cats don't like them, but its worth a try. They're only about $12 at Wal-Mart. Obviously your mom and brother want them to stay, so you probably will just have to learn to live with it or stay somewhere else.

Try cleaning the litter boxes. Cats are not smelly animals, it's the people that dont clean the litter box that will cause the house to smell. It's also not your house so you have no say in the matter.

You refuse to invite people over because it might smell? OK, unless no one's cleaning the box regularly, it shouldn't smell THAT bed. I doubt anyone else would even notice. And it's your mom's house. So if you don't like the rules in it, go get your own.

The cats have a home. They are used to having a comfortable place to live, people to care for them and protect them. They are not equipped for a life outside where anything and anyone could do them harm. Maybe you could buy a different kitty litter container, litter-stuff, more floral spray. Think of letting a defenseless animal out in the streets to fend for itself. I would think of how I could make it better- than doing away with the cats. I wouldn't dare let my dog go away from me. She is the JOY of my life!
