I took her to the doctor and he said that it is unusual for a child this young to prefer to use one side over the other & he referred me to a neurologist....if I hold her right hand she will reach out with her left hand but she has a hard time picking things up with it...I have been watching her legs since we noticed her hands & she does the same. Has anyone ever experienced this? I'm a little nervous that it could be something terrible. Does anyone know of any excercises that I could do with her to try to build up the strength on that side of her body. I made the appointment to the neorologists, but the earliest one is in May...she'll be 1 yr at that point & I'd like to start doing something about this much sooner. I tried other doctors but their waiting period is the same.

My kids went back and forth with something like that too. I don't know if what you are describing is just normal or a problem.
Try to relax. Do what you can to offer toys from the other side. Also, have plenty of crayons and paper around to let her color. Put one in each hand. My daughter never uses her left hand to color, but we offer. My son, colors with both hands (he's 2 1/2). I think some kids pick one side and others just know they want to be righties. Maybe it is a girl thing.
Play lots of clapping games too. Sing itsy bitsy spider with arm movements. Does she raise up her arms? Does she try to clap?
These are things you want to encourage.

Hope all goes well in May!

I can't believe the Dr. couldn't reccomend anyone to test her for developmental problems without a neurologist. They would have to be expert in children also at this point. I really think I would call around maybe to a daycare center, schools, pediatricians that specialize in children....maybe physical therapy, any place that might reffer you to another venue for this child before that long. She may just need some extra attention on using that side of her body. Really call anyone you can. What about Social Services...they have the resources and know all the treatment centers around. Then ask your Dr. to call and get you in. Take charge, that is how it is today, we have to be our own advocates for our own care, Dr's are too busy. Good luck. I wish you well.

Till she has her appointment, you could use resistance training. like pulling a bungee cord to exercise muscles. Encourage her to use her left hand and leg. A physical thearpist may be needed also.
