Either the camcorder is not turned on and/or not set to play/vcr mode.
If you're using windows xp OS, A sure thing is to connect the camcorder first to the pc before turning the power on, then set it to vcr/play mode. wait some seconds for the pc to process and recognize the device. Only after the device is recognized that you open any software you like.

If you're using windows 2000 or lower, you need to run the camcorder cd first to install the driver. after it's done, then connect the device.

Also, make sure all connections are properly placed.

Glad to be of Help!

careful when using Firewire. Make sure your camcorder is turned off before you plug it in to your computer, otherwise, the firewire port could fry. Anyway, once you plug it in, check to see if your camcorder is in VCR mode. Run your editing program. Im not sure what else to say. Any other details with your problem would help.

It could be that the firewire interface is not seated properly. Check that the firewire card is plugged in correct and snug.

One more thing is do you turn the camcorder to 'Play' after connecting to the firewire interface? Don't turn the camcorder to 'Camera'/'Capture'/'Record'.

have you told your computer what it is? just plugging things in doesnt always work. did the camcorder come with a disk? then perhaps load the drivers first before plugging it in. once the computer understands what it is that has plugged in it will identify it.

windows XP has most products loaded, but you just have to isolate it. if it had no disk, search online for 'Drivers" to do with that brand and model of camcorder.

This a common occurance. You may need to seek out user groups for solutions, which often call for tinkering with the Windows video driver.
