I am 13 years old 175 pounds 5.10 foot. I have been training for 6 months and for the past 1-2 weeks I have not been able to train well. Today I raced a fellow student and after the race ended I felt a pain in my hip-groinal area. I think I may have a small bump there but I have different thoughts about what it may be. The other day I went ice skating and i fell hard on that same hip. It hurts in the same place where i got hit. I also have another detail there are 2 light to what me appear as veins right under my belly button. I also believe this pain might have accured because of my belt.

And if i do have a hernia is the operation complicated and will I ever be able to recover my strength as I would like to play at the college level after HS. I am a defensive end.

the fact that injury caused your pain might mean you have a hernia. if you hadn't received an injury, it could have been inflammation in your epididymis. but, since you got hurt, there is a chance you could have. given your weight, it's also more likely that you could have a hernia. the only way to know for sure is to see a doctor. you should talk to your parents right away and tell them what happened and that you think it might be a hernia. good luck to you and don't worry, it's an easy operation if you do have one. good luck!

Definitely lay off the leg for a while. From what you described I gather that the pain initially began after falling on it at an ice rink so my first guess would be a bruise, but since racing would be unlikely to aggravate that I would think that it is a possible fracture. In the general hip area there is a (for lack of a better word) bump, that is natural. I've recently had an injury where I had an Avulsion fracture of the hip. I am 15 170 and 5' 8" so we might not be all that far off. Before I actually completely broke the bone away I had been feeling pain similar to what you are describing. Before I saw a doctor I was also worried that it might be a hernia, but it turned out to be a fracture. A fracture like this is not extremely hard to find in people our age. As you are growing the growth plate in your hip may end up weakening the bone making it prone to breaks and fractures.

From what I gather hernia operations are fairly simple and you should be able to recover full strength given proper time to heal. It is much easier to recover from an injury at your current age while you are still growing than it is later in life.

But I could be completely off target here. Definitely stay off of the leg for a while (if it is the beginning of a fracture you don't want to finish breaking it, thats what I did and it hurt like hell) , tell your coach that you are worried about injuring it, and go see your PCP. Given the symptoms they may decide to do an X-ray or just poke around a bit.

Good luck, Please let me know what happens if you get the chance :)

Let the doctor check you out. The operation is not that complicated, you will totally recover. Good luck with your football.... see you on TV.
