1. It can give a society a common goal and a common view of the world, so they can make sense of the world in ways that are in common with each other, so they can relate to each other. An example may be when Buddhist societies support the monks by alms so that they can be teachers to the laymen, and so that they can pursue their enlightenment. The monks in turn help society by their teachings of peace, etc.
2. Some organized religions can have the effect of setting one religious group against another. It puts forth an "us versus them" feeling among the adherents of a particular religion. This can mean that wars are fought between various religions or denominations, such as in Ireland, between the Protestants and Catholics.

Religion makes you blind and numb but will try and satisfy what you dont have. After you get tired you will find something better peaceful where there is no need for religion but rather belief that brings love.Religion seperates people and brings hate like atheism and chrsitians. As christians we love but atheist hate the word JESUS CHRIST.If christianity was taught peace would happen in society if all acepted but not the case.

I think the modern choice would pretty obvious - Muslims.
Actually, you might look at fundamentalism in general, as in, the dangers presented by fundamentalists of all faiths (Christianity and Muslim being the two best known for insane fundamentalism).
EDIT to add: Excuse me, I meant "Islam," not "Muslim." It's late, OK?
