Please consider adopting a retired racing greyhound. They are placed in foster homes prior to adoption so they can be tested out for cat-compatability. I have one, and he gets along fine with my two cats. They are great apartment dogs, need very little exercise, shed very little, and don't have a doggy odor. Plus, they are very sweet and affectionate, and are well-socialized with other dogs.

I wouldn't torture a border collie by keeping it penned up in the condo-- they are very active dogs who "need a job" to keep happy (like herding sheep or agility training).

An older shelter dog. It does not necessarily have to be a senior, but usually with the shelter dogs, they are used to cats, need a good home, and are generally behavior trained. I have 3 senior shelter dogs, 1 3 year old shelter dog, and two cats. The dogs do not even pay attention to the cats, they are the best behaved dogs i have ever seen and they are already potty trained. These dogs need a good home and a few of our friends got puppies and younger dogs and they are so frustrated by the amount of work it is to keep up with them chewing, etc. whereas our dogs are so good. Hope this helps. I love my dogs more than anything and wouldn't trade them for a puppy for nothing! I have a lab/dane mix, an australian shepherd mix, and two chihuahuas. After adopting one and falling in love, we just kept going back for more, because they are the best dogs ever!

There are a lot of dog breeds that fit what you are looking for in a dog. Before I suggest any breeds, would you consider two dogs to keep each other company while you are gone? Getting two would be great as they wouldn't have access to a backyard and they could stay happy inside while you are gone.
Labrador Retriever, Golden Retriever, Shetland Sheepdog, Collie, Australian Shepherd, Boxer, Brittany (Spaniel), Giant Schnauzer, English Setter, Samoyed, Dobermann, Beagle, Bloodhound or Keeshond would suit you.

What you want is a big dog with low energy needs......
I have heard that Great Danes can live in an apartment and they have low energy needs because they were trained to be guard dogs and not herding dogs.....
But every time I have seen a Great Dane it looked like a high energy dog to me!!!
I'm skeptical that the Great Dane/Apartment myth is true... but you could look into it. And I'm not sure the dog would FIT in your apartment.... :P
Below are links about Great Danes and apartments.
Quote from 3rd link:
"Do you have the room for a Dane? While my Dane is pretty inactive, she still needs exercise and needs room to lay down, play, and stretch out."

Well then a medium to large dog is for you. What about a border collie or better yet a labrador retrever. Labs love most animals including cats. They tolerate you being gone for a moderate amount of time they love to run and play and are less risky then most other breeds.

Well, I personally think Standard Poodles are great dogs. I have two and they get along fine with my cat. They can do fine in an apartment provided they are given daily exercise. They get along with most everyone. They don't shed and don't have a doggy smell. You can read all about them on my website.

I would recomend a rottweiller. These dogs don't mind their owner being gone, love to exercise, are not hyperactive, and are not excessive barkers. A great dog for an apartment. They also can protect your apartment from any burgulars.

labrador retriever, but watch out if you get a puppy, they aren't completely emotionally mature until 3 years. i have a 2 year old that is completely lazy and sleeps all day, but goes absolutely nuts when i play with her. great dogs though, really!

Boston Terrier, Bulldog & Pug match your description. Go to http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/search.htm and enter the traits you are looking for in a dog to see what other breeds match.

boxers......they are awesome dogs.....smart, excellent with kids. I dont think i will ever have another dog. Be careful of cardiomyopathy and hip dysplasia, etc. By any pure breed dog from a reputable breeder, not a pet store in a mall.
