It takes a lot of effort and a commitment to make things work despite the distance.....both involved have to be willing to work at it........but I have given advice to several friends involved in long distance relationships and it seems to work......
1. communicate....when something isn't working talk about it...don't let it simmer and grow into something that can't be worked out
2. take time out for each other.....I suggested "date nights" to my friends dealing with long distance relationships....even online it's possible to "go on a date"...just pick a night.....and plan something special just as if you were going on an actual date....example....both of you rent the same movie.....and watch it together....chatting on IM or over the phone...having snacks...if you have webcams you could turn the cam on while watching the movie and have the visual of each other as well.....use your imagination and have fun with it....there are tons of things you could do for an online "date"
3. start an online journal....where you write feelings, thoughts to each other......and respond.....there are several sites that you could use for this(I put the link for one such site below)
4. Have a game nite.....go to one of the online game sites....pogo.com, king.com, yahoo games or any of those....and play a few games together.....
good luck

They generally don't, unfortunately. It depends on several factors - the strength of connection before the distancing, personalities, each person's future plans, attitudes towards the relationship - too much to name
