I have a neutered male, 3 years old. He seems a bit loney, sleeping a lot, yet a very family oriented cat. I have been thinking of getting him a little friend, though am concerned as to which gender would go best with my male cat. I am very worried about upsetting him, not wanting a friend, though, again, he seems like he could use a friend. Please respond as to which gender would suite my neutered male, 3-year-old ,cat that I have. Also, he was adopted at 11 weeks. He is absolutely a great cat!!!

A male kitten is what I'd choose. Two nuetered maes always seem to get along faster and better than one male and one female or 2 females together.

I would probably go with a female. Even though your boy is neutered, he is still a male and may react badly to another male. I have had up to 6 cats, 3 males, 3 females. I now am down to 2 males and a female. The boys are good with each other, basically ignoring each other, but they both play with the female. I also think your idea of getting a furry friend for your boy is a good one. Two cats are better than one, they do keep each other company when their people are not around.

Remember that your boy may react badly at first and there will be lots of hissing, spitting and even some swatting and fur flying. He will have to let the newcomer know who is boss. Give it a week or 10 days and you will find them snuggled together laying in a sun soaked spot.

I had the same situation except the other way around. I had a three year old girl cat and I got a male kitten. When I was looking into this everyone told me that male-female is a better combination. I have to say my cats get along great! They play with each other and are like best friends. So I would recomend to get a female kitten to go with your male cat. Hope this helps :)

If he is a good cat, he shouldn't mind either. Give him a test run, bring someone elses cat over for a visit (assuming that both cats have been vaccinated and are healthy) and see how he reacts to another animal in the house.

Don't get discouraged at first if new kitty and old kitty don't get along, eventually they will adjust and learn to either love, or avoid each other.

A tip to help the jealousy and transition: Start out with separate litter boxes and food bowls, to keep old kitty from feeling like his territory is being invaded.

First of all, the sex of the new cat will not matter to him. What makes you think hes lonely? Maybe he is just relaxed? I don't know. You know your cat best. Do know this....no matter what, any cat you get will tick him off in the beginning. They will hiss, growl and spat at each other for the first couple weeks. Don't be alarmed by that, it's perfectly normal. They will get over it. Then they will either become best buddies, or ignore each other. It's hard to tell which. Boy or girl, it won't matter to him, just make sure you get it spayed or neutered as well!! Good luck!

My 9 year old neutered male cat does NOT like any other cat. I kept my boyfriend neutered 8 months female cat who was trying to play and jump with my cat...WOW! I was scared. But, actually everything went fine. My cat howled and hissed and hit (claws in, no injury!) at her...but then she just ran away...and came back 5 minutes later for another round of introduction! She would try to play with his tail...and jump around him. He would get startled and get in attack position..but then again, nothng. HE would try his best to ignore her.
So, as some ppl said, any cat but neutered will be fine. Take time for adjustments, and see. Friends or just someone to avoid. Maybe my cat is too old for any newby in his life. :-)
