Also, how long can you expect a child to be awake for when you put them down? If they are up for more then an hour am I putting them down too early?

Your child should be getting 12 hours of sleep at the very least per day (naps included). My 18 month old gets up in the morning, is up for about 5 or 6 hours, takes an hour nap (usually between 12 and 1) and goes to sleep at night. She sleeps 11-12 hours a night. If your child gets tired and wants a nap after only 2 hours of waking up, I dont see a problem with that though. Let them sleep-its good for them.

Part of it does depend on the kid. I'd say a toddler should sleep about 10hours a night and take an afternoon nap. Some kids take longer to put to sleep than others. You may need to try some soft music in the room or laying with your child and rubbing his or her back. Maybe the child is too awake at bedtime due to stimulating activities. The hour before bed should be quiet time to relax and wind down.

you should try to let the kid gets around half a day (12 hrs) of shuteye, but the timing is very irregular. it would be best if you can get the little fellow to sleep at a set time but at that age the clock is something the kids ignores, so don't expect it to work every time. it is possible you are putting them down too early if they are up an hour but how long they are up would vary day by day. if the kid wants to stay up a little, let em, as long as they do not cry.
