Let me see if I can give you a layman's answer that will make sense to you. My computer was giving trouble and I had a techie come over to fine-tune it for me. He was a Windows XP expert technician with 25+ years experience and he worked quickly without talking too much. I asked him about Vista. My question began to run on and on and he did the strongest answer I have ever seen in my life. He stopped what he was doing and stared at the monitor in front of him for a second and then he slowly turned his head toward me and made steady eye contact. He then closed his eyes and shook his head very slowly sideways, back and forth sideways... meaning nooooooooo. Then he resumed the work he was doing. He was saying, "Don't go there. The answer is no. NO. What part of NO do you not understand? Run, do not walk, in the opposite direction!" And so on. It was so funny! I said, after a few minutes of silence, "Well, okay, then. That settles that!" And he stopped again and turned toward me again and slowly shook his head up and down (meaning yessssssss). I have Windows XP Professional, Service Pack 2. Later when he was not so totally focused on what he was doing he told me not to even bother looking at Vista for about five years after they have had plenty of time to work out all the bugs. It is a power hog. Fancy gimmicks. All I can tell you is what I am going to not-do. I cannot tell you what to not-do. I am not going near that operating system, ever. If you could have seen how final his shaking his head from side to side was, you would see why I will NEVER buy Vista. I hope my answer brings some light to an otherwise hard question for the average guy to answer with any real meaning you could use. - Chris!

You are right, you do need alot of hardware upgrades to run vista properly. I would make sure I had a min. 1 gig of ram, 2 is better, at least an intel 3 ghz motherboard, or AMD 3800 and a good video card with 256mb of ram on it.
Any tech will tell you, you are best to wait until at least the first service pack is released, as there are sure to be bugs as well.
I know for a fact, alot of companies do not have compatible drivers for xp, so you may have a problem with your printer, or other hardware.
My advise, XP works fine....give it some time.
Good Luck

The history of Microsoft!!!
Every two or three years, MS issues a new operating system that you "must" buy.
Then, during the first two or three years, they find bugs and problems, and issue a "service pack" to fix the problems.
At this time, Win XP is pretty stable and pretty good. Make sure you have service pack 2.
In three years (at least!), Vista will be safe to use. Wait till then...

Hold your horses.
You can upgrade to Vista anytime. It is pretty much unsupported at the moment regarding firewall + antivirus.
Wait for 6-12 months and then consider upgrading. XP will be the mimimum system requirements for a year or two yet.

No not yet. Windows Vista requires alot more RAM to run as it is graphics intense. It will slow down older machines significantly.
Also only a select few programs are compatable at this time. I say wait until you have a faster machine and the market is more adjusted to supply software.
Good Luck

I think Mircosoft said they were going to stop supporting XP from either 2010 or 2012. (ie: no security patches for any vulnerabilities)
There is no real rush to get Vista unless you need it for next-generation PC games, and future software which more and more will be designed primarily for Vista.
For general web surfing, listening to mp3s, videos ect, then XP will be fine.

you should wait till like next year to upgrade your Xp because Vista still has some minor bugs but if you can deal with it then go ahead and upgrade your Xp and it doesn't really take up that much of your hard drive but it does take up alot of your RAM

Vista is great. Great problems, great holes, great bugs and all pretty much un-supported.
Micro$oft would love you to upgrade at present- why? Cos it wants your money. If your current PC does what YOU want then its fine....Dont be tempted yet, and no you wont be 'left behind' - as micro$oft want you to believe. Do you really want the latest gadget or are you really in need of it?
Want or need? ...... Want or Need?

They give you the impression that your XP pc is now obsolete, but believe me, all Microsoft wants is more of your money. Only buy a new pc when you're good and ready; cause hey, you're still online... world hasn't caved in yet.
