I don't think you can get a new car for under $10,000 anymore, but a nice used car would be a Honda Civic, Volkswagon Beetle, Mini Cooper, Chevy Aveo, Ford Focus, any older Lexus, any older Toyota.

If you are under age 21, get a car thats atleast 10 years old or else you will spend that $10,000 on insurance. It also depends where you live and if it snows. If it snows you want something with all-wheel drive or front wheel drive. If you live in the south you could have something with Rear-wheel drive or front-wheel drive. I would personally have a 1989 Mustang Saleen if i lived in the south, or a mid 90's Mitsubishi Eclipse if I lived in the north.

hmmm I already have a nice Gremlin, SO for under 10 g's I would get a Bad *** Jeep CJ-7 With V8 and a Four speed. Or maybe a nice 1991 Ford Mustang LX 5.0 assuming it hasnt been trashed. Or possibley a 1969 AMC AMX .

Older muscle cars can be had in decent shape for less than $10,000. I have far less than that in my 64 Impala and 70 Charger (each). Other good models would be Camaro, Mustang, Chevelle, ElCamino, Cutlass, Grand Torino, Ranchero, etc.
Older cars are unique, not everybody can go out and get one. But the downsides are usually reliability and driveability.

Well for under 10,000 dollars I doubt you could find a new car. But I want a mini cooper. So cute and they're real nice.
