As long as they're both fixed (and they really should be fixed anyway), it doesn't matter.
Here's a great article on integrating kittens and cats:
http://www.metanoia.org/suicide/
You might want to consider getting two, even - two kittens can tire each other out and won't be as annoying to your older cat as one little one permanently trying to play with her.

I've had cats my entire life it doesn't matter when you're introducing a kitten the older cat still feels dominant and will act as a father figure to the kitten. I personally have found boy cats to be more cuddly

As long as they're fixed, they really don't treat each other any different. At least none that I've ever had have had a problem with cats of a different gender. Sometimes two males who aren't fixed will both want to be the "dominant" tomcat, which doesn't work out very well.

well if you do boy-boy make sure they are both fixed so that you don't end up with them spraying for territory...and same goes for boy-girl so you don't end up with 50 cats lol. I personally think you would be ok with either one just realize that you will have hissy fits for the first two weeks of bringing a new cat into your house while they decide who's boss of the household lol. Enjoy!

It really depends on the cats' temperament, but if I had to choose, boy-girl would probably be a better combination. Make sure you get them fixed, though... or you'll get a lot more kitties than you bargained for.

Either a male or female kitten should be an OK choice. Of course all must be neutered.

It depends on the individual cats.
Your 3 year old may or may not bond with the baby. And the baby may decide it wants to be an only child.
You just never know.

Depends a lot on personalty. If they're fixed it shouldn't' matter, and they should be.
Female cats are just fine to. They clean themselves, abuse the dog.... purr.
Wait a sec, most all cats do that....
