The answer to this question is not really all that well known, although current research suggests that small seasonal changes lead to big outbreaks in the annual pattern that we see.

The flu virus is constantly adapting, so as new viruses arise and infect people, those people begin to spread the infection to other people resulting in amplification of transmission and the "outbreak", then as that strain of flu begins to run out of new people to infect, the outbreak resolves... the virus changes, finds new people to infect, and the cycle continues.

The actual seasonal changes responsible for this cycle, however, are still unknown.

because were all couped-up and dont get outside to get as much fresh air. plus, our homes arent "aired-out", thus germs are more readily trapped
