After my second baby was born I was at least 20 lbs away from my pre-pregnancy weight. Although I breastfed, worked out, even attended Weight Watchers, I could not lose one pound. I weaned my baby at one year and within two months I had lost the entire 20 lbs - it literally melted off of me. Now I am breastfeeding my third baby who is 9 months old. I am still hanging onto 20 lbs that I'm sure will come off when she's weaned (hopefully!).
Some women shed weight while they're breastfeeding. Others, like me, keep on some weight during that time. I've read that it's our body's way of ensuring that there would be enough fat stores to make milk if we were forced into starvation.
I bet if you began exercising and building muscle your weight would not change. However, when you finished breastfeeding, your body would shed the fat layer and you would be left with a lean and gorgeous body!
Just remember you are truly giving up your body for your baby - probably the best gift anyone will ever give him/her. Treasure the time you have to be so intimately close - it goes by too fast. Good luck to you!

How breastfeeding affects your weight is different for different women. Producing milk requires about 500 calories a day over your normal calorie needs. Some people will tell you that they lost weight breastfeeding, others that they couldn't lose weight, others that they even gained weight. The difference? How many calories they ate versus how many calories they burned.
If you want to lose weight (breastfeeding or not), you need to burn more calories than you eat. When breastfeeding, you need to be careful, since you are not only providing fuel for yourself, but also for your baby. Eat a well balanced diet and exercise moderatly and you will probably lose some weight.
There are many women who do "hold on to" 5-10 pounds of baby weight while breastfeeding, even with weight loss efforts. This may be the body's defense against not having enough food for the baby. So, if you get to that point before you wean, and you can't lose more, don't worry too much. After the baby weans, you need to be sure to adjust your calories again, since you won't be making milk anymore.

RE:
Do you lose weight when you quit breastfeeding?
When I went to the doctor last week, I found out that I'm 20lbs away from my pre-pregnancy weight .. My aunt said most of that weight will shed off after I quit breastfeeding. Anyone have a clue ? .. Will exercising really get me dramatic results right now?

Everyone is different. I never lost much weight at all while I was breastfeeding, but I did lose most of my weight and got 5 lbs away from my prepregnancy weight after I stopped breastfeeding. It took me a little while, but I eventually lost it.

I found the book to be very informative and easy to read.
I've lost 17 pounds in 12 days, I'm just concerned that I'm losing too much weight, too quickly. I will admit I haven't followed the guide exactly. I'm not sticking perfectly to the listed foods and meal plans (but mostly) and doing very little exercise, but the weight keeps flying off.
It clearly works and if I'd followed it exactly I think it would scare the living daylights out of me because of the amount that I'd lose. So thanks again for the information. I've never purchased anything like this before because they are usually full of trash, but 3WD has been a pleasant surprise.

Actually, you lose weight much more quickly when you are exclusively breastfeeding. At 1 yr my daughter is still breastfeeding around the clock and I am at my lowest weight ever. Partly because breastfeeding burns more calories, and partly because I am concentrating on eating healthy to keep my milk supply up and as high quality as I can.

Most doctors actually recommend you stay about 10 lbs over your pre-pregnancy weight while breastfeeding. Personally, I lost all my baby weight and then some breastfeeding. After my daughter weaned I started gaining, and when I got pregnant with my son I was 12 lbs heavier than when I got pregnant with my daughter.

No,when your breastfeeding your body holds fat away just in case, like a animal storing food for the winter.Don't worry when you stop breastfeeding those extra 20lbs will melt away in no-time.I stopped breast feeding my daughter at eight months old and right now i am five pounds under my post-pregnancy weight.
Best wishes,
Tasha
