A flock of sheep is a good toy. I say that in all seriousness. Or a bunch of agility or flyball equipment.

They love to run, run, and run! I have a border collie, a shelty, and a springer spaniel, and none of them seem to keep up with our 2 year old border collie, "Akeira" and she is a wild thing. It is great if you can get them lots of excersize and attention, as with any dog. A side note however is that when the Males get excited, they pee themselves, and with the female we have, we have never had that problem, as compared to the 2 males we had before that. As for a good companion, you want a dog that will play with it. Cats are a no-no of course so don't get a cat, or if you have one, it is best to get the border collie young so it gets used to the cat and the cat used to the pup. Back to the subject of a companion, I would recomend a australian shepherd, or chocolate lab. Because both breeds are very energetic, and playful.

I think to answer your question I would refer you to
http://www.bordercolliesociety.com/
Here they can put you in touch with local breeders that you can go visit and actually get time to see and be around border collies. They can also give you advice from experience. Border collies are a high drive dog breed, who are bred to work. They need constant, focused activities to keep them from becoming destructive. They have a high trainability, but they aren't a dog you can expect to crate while you aren't home for any length of time. To really decide if a border collie is for you I would really say the only way to tell is to actually spend time around the breed. I hope this helps. Good Luck.

If he has enough stuff to do around the house, he can entertain himself. The only time this would really work though is if the dog gets enough exercise the rest of the time. Border Collies are very energetic dogs, and as long as you can keep them exercised enough you shouldn't have any problems. (In theory of course). Make sure he has enough toys, maybe half a dozen balls in the kitchen so he can herd them around the hard flooring!!!
