I am a stay at home mother of two. I met my husband when I was sixteen. In only four years I married had two children, two miscarriages (I was using protection with all four pregnancies) Dropped out of highschool and became a home maker. I am twenty two now and I stay home with my two children. My husband work two jobs. Recently he stummbled upon some of my old paintings and told me how much he liked them. He started encouraging me to start painting again. I did and my work is more incredable than ever! Every piece I do is better than the last. My husband is thrilled. My family however just kind of laughed at me. They told me that I was just a highschool drop out housewife with no talent and that anyone that I showed my work to would only laugh me out of their gallery. That made me think. Would my not so terrific history trample any chance I have of being really seen, and taken seriously? Are they telling me the truth or am I just kidding myself?

Do not put yourself down. Many people have become successful in this world by following their passions.

Your husband sounds as if he is a great person, and you need to be paying attention to your own heart and mind.

Your "family" sounds very jealous and unsupportive. You need to ignore them, they do not own your heart and your dreams. I would choose to turn that criticism around and really show them how much I could do!

There are many women who have not even completed high school who are doing great things in this world.

You could talk to some art teachers in your local high school and area colleges, many of these places have art shows for local artists as fundraisers for their programs. They may let you put some of your pieces on display.

Check with area restaurants and coffee shops, many business owners enjoy having artwork to display, and you could have lots of people see your work. If you have a speciality type of painting, such as pets you could ask the local vet to put up a few paintings in the lobby, one of our local vets does so, and the artist takes special requests for many of the clients.

I can feel the excitement that you are feeling about the paintings in your life, do not let a little history hold you back. Visit some art galleries and look at how items are priced, so that you can come up with a fair price for any of your pieces if someone inquires about purchasing them.

Best of luck, God bless and have a good night.

Never pass up the chance to regain your talent's possibilities - I had a horrible past; abusive ex, pregnant at seventeen, etc. Now I am happily married to a man that supports my love of writing and drawing, and it is wonderful. My family was always supportive, but even so, I know that I am married now to him and him alome; we are together as one. Never let your past ruin anything - it can't, only if you let it. Oh, I'm 21 now and have 2 kids myself, 3 and 6 mths.

First of all, it sounds like you have a wonderful husband. You should follow your dream. You do not have a horrible history and don't let anyone tell you that. Your husband and children are your family, and if you have their support that is all you need.

First of all, I think your husband is a great catch.

As for galleries showing your work, there's no harm in trying. If they don't like your stuff, you're not any worse off than you are now.

If you're an artist, you create art -- regardless of the commercial aspects. Nobody cared much for the efforts of VanGogh until after he was dead.

Your not kidding yourself. Keep painting! Follow your heart. If you don't you will always wonder about "what if".
