Or is the freewill in the way?

As you stated: you have a free will, and that GOD has set rules to live by, which has a wonderful reward for doing so if seriously followed.
I believe: GOD will NOT take away your free will, as this is a major gift, by GOD, to us all. Also - yes GOD can make you anything GOD wants - GOD won't interfere in our lives - as others have pointed out.

So, then this leaves you controlling you.
Your life - your choices.
GOD tests us - that's for sure, so become educated and keep your friends and family close for the bad days. But we learn as we grow, (experience from family/friends is a valuable tool to lessen bad mistakes). But make mistakes and learn from them. Be adventurous! Take risks! Growing and living are messy - enjoy it!!!!!
Peace!

God helps the willing.

If you are willing to allow God to help you to be a better person - you will be a better person.

If you don't want to do that - such will indeed get in the way which of course would be your freewill to make that choice.

Yes, God can help you to become a better person. As they say He actually makes us better. You must use your freewill to cooperate with God's graces. For example, Yahoo answers is a grace. You get to know God here. You can reject Him despite what others have said or you can accept Him. Freewill is a gift. Freedom is to do what is right. We are free when we do what God wants us to do. "We are free when we do what we ought to do" (Ariston Estrada) We are not free when we do bad things. We are not free when we do evil. We are not free when we refuse to love others. We are not free when we hurt others. Sin enslaves. Love and God frees us from the enslavement of sin. God gives you the grace to be good. Your freedom will cooperate with His grace so it is not in the way. Without freedom we cannot love God. God wants us to love Him freely. He does not force us to love him.

God helps you to be a better person by advising you and strengthening your conscience.

He's given you the bible as an instruction manual, and if you accept Jesus as your Savior, God's Holy Spirit will be your conscience. He doesn't force you into anything, but he guides you.

But you can't expect God to simply change you if you're unwilling to take his advice and obey what's been written in the bible. That's where free will comes in.

God can help you as long as you want him too, you have to apply yourself, sincere heart felt prayers would help, although, you too have to help yourself as much as you can, put effort into doing what is right, trusting in God to lead, guide and teach you through life experiences. And learn the oracles of God.

the only person who can help you be a better person is you. There is no god. If you don't like who you are now, simply make up your mind to change one thing a day or week until you become the person you want to be.
