A tsunami is a tidal wave, that is, a huge variation in the water level that spreads around in the shape of a wave, a wave that gains height as it gets in the shallow water near a coastline.
Earthquakes can cause tsunami, so can volcanic eruptions. Additionally, land slides, when a large chunk of a cliff falls in water, can also create a tsunami.

Merriam-Webster says "a great sea wave produced especially by submarine earth movement or volcanic eruption".
Large earthquakes or volcanic eruptions under the sea can cause them. I'm not sure what a third way would be...maybe a huge landslide from a seaside mountain into the water?
