Although I would love to have a President like Mitt Romney, I don't think it's going to happen.
He is currently only 4th on the Republican polls. The top 3 are: John McCain (Arizona senator for several terms and former military serviceman), Rudy Giuliani (former Mayor of New York and 9/11 celebrity), and Newt Gingrich (former congressman and Speaker of the House).
Romney has been a businessman (albeit a very successful one) and a one-term governor.
I also don't think that it would be the best thing for the Church for a LDS president to be elected. Just look at the questions on Yahoo! answers right now. People are asking all about his Mormon underwear, his Mormon rituals, what he does in his Mormon temple, and about Joseph Smith when he ran for President, only to be killed shortly thereafter. People have access to all sorts of sensitive Church information, and a Mormon president would only bring it out more into the public eye for sacred LDS rituals to be scrutinized and publicized.
Plus, if a LDS President is actually elected, you had better believe that there will be people who will want him dead. JFK was the last religiously-controversial President to be elected (Catholic) and was shot dead after 3 years in office. There are many people who do not feel it is a crime to rid the world of those who "defile God and proclaim abominations", which is something many people think about the LDS people. Just look at the protesters during Conference weekend at Temple Square...
Anyway, I wish Romney the best of luck; I'll probably vote for him in the primaries, but I suspect McCain will get the ticket in '08 and run against Hillary.

I agree with most everyone out there that it will be a big deal that Romney is a Latter-day Saint, but I think it will really come down to something else. Assuming that Romney wins in the primaries, he probably wouldn't win the presidency, not because of his religous affiliaition, but because the entirety of the American populous is completely sick and tired of having a Republican in office. It's in no way Mitt's fault that W was an incompetant boob, but it would probably end up costing him the election.

I am not Mormon but I want Mitt Romney to win. Yes he is a mormon but he has everything that is right for being President. I am going to vote for him. Who will vote for someone who has been married 5 times and is cheating on his wife. Mitt Romney wouldn't do that. He has almost everything I like.

Unfortunately, this may be the case. This should not have to be an issue, though. He has good morals, values, and views on how this country will be improved for the better. This is the same man that saved the SLC winter olympics. Romney should not be a victim of prejudice because he is exercising his right to the first amendment, like all Americans are.
Go Romney!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm Mormon, and I like Romney, but I still have a long way before I am giving him my vote. I have often leaned Democratic, but also don't vote party-line. I think we should look at each of the candidates closely, and look at what matters, like their history, their agenda, their morals, etc. It will be interesting. It would be rediculous for people to make a decision based on his religion alone.

I don't want him to win, but then I'm one of the dreaded liberals.
I don't care that he's a Mormon; honestly, I don't. If he could run for office and absolutely NOT push his religious ideas into our laws, AND if he was a liberal, I'd like him.
IOW, I'm against him not because he's Mormon, but because he's conservative.

As long as you keep calling him a "Mormon," he probably won't win. "Mormon" is a slang term coined in the 1800's as a derogatory term. The general public, most of whom are some form of Christian, do not believe "Mormons" are Christians, which is far from the case.
In a recent General Conference of The Church of Jesus Christ of Later-day Saints, the general authorities urged the members to stop calling themselves "Mormons" or "Later-day Saints" (LDS). Instead, they urged them to call themselves by their real name, members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Later-day Saints. I think we all need to start doing that as well. Granted, it is a long name. If you wanted to shorten it, I guess "member of The Church of Jesus Christ" would suffice, unless "The Church of Jesus Christ" has already been taken. If not, I believe that abbreviation retains the important part. It kind of makes you wonder who they believe in, doesn't it?

I think the DNC will take it in 2008.
Probably Hillary Clinton...and that's a big story and rationale within itself.
The problem with the GOP is that they are acting in many, many ways like the DNC. We have the heights of corruption in Washington DC, a broken culture and no strength to fight that on the horizon.
Mormons have good qualities socially and for this country, but they don't have the pull to make real change. They are a micro-group.
