I know a 3 year old little girl and she doesn't hardly talk at all. Once in a while she will say you're name or a word, but even when she does it's hard to understand her. I have 3 year old cousins who can speak Spanish, speaks in complete sentences, knows the days of the week, can count, and more. I was just wondering why the first little girl I talked about is so late to talk??

Sometimes kids who talk late are better at gorss motor skills, like climbing and running and riding a bike. Any case that is the case with the little girl? Maybe she was potty trained by two, but the boys still war diapers? It is hard for kids to learn every skill at once.

It is very normal to be quiet. My little girl will be three in May and she hardly talks at all to anyone but me (she goes to school three hours every day) I have trouble understanding her, and I'm her mom! But I can tell she understands everything, so I'm not worried. (I've talked to our doctor about this too)

I've also heard about kids who don't talk for reasons like either they don't need to because they are being taken care of well and so don't need to ask for attention or other things. Also, some kids are around other people who talk so much that they don't talk at all themselves. (happens a lot with siblings!)

By the age of 3, a stranger should be able to understand 75% of a child's utterance. If it can't be explained by shyness, there can be many reasons her speech is delayed, and that can only be sorted out by a pediatric speech pathologist.
Your cousins are the exception, rather than the rule. It's quite unusual for a three year-old to be so advanced.

She may have a speech delay. Her parents need to talk with the pediatrician and the local school district to have her evaluated fro the delay. Of course bringing this to a parents attention is difficult. If she recieves interventions early, chances are this delay could be resolved completely by 8 or 9

Check with your local school district I'm sure they have some sort of early education speech program. The girl should be tested the sooner the better. If she gets help now hopefully she will be fine in the long run.

My little brother didn't talk till he was almost three, but when he was two years old, we had the state department of education come in and tutor him, and now he speaks fine. some children just need some extra help.

all childern development differntly. does the lkil girl use a pacifer? if so massage her cheecks. if not does she have a medical problem with the bottom of her tounge? if so she needs to see her peditrician and the problem can be solved pretty quickly. but if its not medical i would take her to the department of education and ask for a tutor to come into the home once a week.

i think alot of it has too 2 with how much the child is worked with and what they grow up around. my 8 yr old talked 100 times better than her cousins when she was starting too talk vs. the difference in two yrs i think but my daughter was raised around mostly older teens so i think working with them and the things they r around both influence the way a child progresses
