I no longer trust greyhound they even may leave you stranded
and no longer service many small cities and if you board
a bus you will probably have to stand for 2 to 4 hours!
as they hardly send out 2nd sections which means you might
see 1 or 2 bus a day going to your destination or they *might*
send a 2nd section two to 12 hours later
but that bus may or may be from greyhound either..
and then if you are lucky you might find a seat but then the bus
wont stop at your city because the bus is too crowded..even there people getting off there!
if you want to travel try Amtrak instead..
at least you can walk around the train visit people have dinner
and get to where you are going easier then with Greyhound
using Amtrak you will have to change either to a bus
in Toledo, OH -
and arrive in Detroit about 15 hours after you leave New York

I wouldn't use Greyhound, not reliable at the present time. Company was just sold and is also on the verge of another labor dispute. I'd use Amtrak or try for a cheap online fare.

About 16 hours (including rest stops and time spent changing busses).

how many stops on the way? how long are the stops total? is the trip during the day or night? (traffic jams?) and what hours of the day or night? And it depends from what part of n.y. and what part of detroit.
Now if you drove straight there with no stops it's 8 hours 56 min.
