my dog had heartworms and they gave us the option of putting her down or putting her through treatment. we put her in treatment and she's still alive today, very old might i add but still alive. i'm sure it depends on how advancded the heart worms are as to what they can do.

I am so sorry for you and your pet. If your pet had to stay in the hospital because of her dehydration, she is probably receiving fluids to rehydrate her.I donot know about the heartworms traveling to its lungs an liver. I do know that there is a treatment for heartworms. It usually work and is expensive. I am almost assured that she will feel better when she gets fluids for her dehydration(make sure that you ask if this is one of the things that they did for her, very important, especially will make her more comfortable) they may have also be treating her for pain, that also helps her more comfortable. I donot know the lenght of time that she has sufferreed with heart worms. Do you feel that your vet is competent? It never hurts to get a second opinion. I would personnaly ask them to try the treatment before giving up on your pet. I am not a vet. My basset hound had been on the mediation to prevent heartworms, I had to take her to another vet once because my normal vet was not available, our regular vet treated her for dehydration and gave her a vitamin injection, she had become lethargic and would not eat This was about three weeks after she saw the new vet. she also had to have fluids. Meagan (my dog) was tested and our regular vet diagnosed her for heart worms. It was positive. I could not understand because she was on preventative mediacation. The vet didnot have an answer for me. She is going to be treated for heartworms very soon. Has you pet had blood test or any other diagnosis procedure? It is very difficult to decide about putting your pet down. If there are no options other than to exist in terrible pain and if you have exhausted all of your options, the only thing that I very sadly recomend is to let her go and she will not suffer any more.I donot know if you are a religious person or not but, I believe that your loving pet has a soul and one day the two of you will be united.I do know that is a very difficult dcision to make and my heart goes out to you. If you make the decision to let her go you are given a choice to be with her during the procedure or not. Please donot feel shame if you would rather not, they will understand. I had to put my Lab to sleep, he was hit by a vehicle and surgery would not be an option.I hugged him and kissed him, then told hem that I loved him very much, The vet had a special place to bury special pets. Then I came home crying all the way home and prayed for him. It is very much like losing a family member. LikeI suggested if you want or need a second opinion by all means ask for one.My heart goes out to you and your precious pet. Take care of yourself and many blessings. (forgive me for the mispelled words,I just have problems correcting them tonight)

Heart worms will definitely kill a pooch. The vet can give the dog a treatment almost as bad as the disease. If she survives that, she'll be ok and she'll have to take regular medication for the rest of her life. Up to you about putting the dog down. That's a hard decision. godloveya.

umm i would consider it worse if she didn't get better and you let her live like that. if she's suffering and won't get better, the best thing to do would be to put her down.
