One word..DIVERSITY! Nascar is expanding it's fanbase to racing fans of all races, backgrounds, cultures, ages, etc. I believe that Nascar will be doing a race in Canada either this season or next season as well.
Nascar is the fastest growing sport in the U.S. and the U.S. is by far one of the most diverse countries in the world.

Just trying to expand their fanbase. Every league is doing it these days. Both the NHL and NFL are playing games in London. MLB just opened an office in China. The NBA went international years ago. Its just a huge league trying to keep up with trends.
To whoever it was that complained that NASCAR isn't coming to Canada, well, it is. There's a Busch race in Montreal later in the year, and, as far as a Cup race, a Montreal race is closer to reality than a Mexico race.

The reason they race in Mexico is to attract Hispanic fans in the US. Hispanics are the fastest growing ethnic group at the moment and NASCAR wants to take advantage of that by providing a race that Hispanics would be interested in watching. The broadcast will be in spanish, which allows Hispanics, who don't speak english, to understand what is happening in the race. I can't say that it works because people who aren't into racing aren't gonna start watching just because they can understand the broadcast.

Nascar is trying to make it more popular around the world instead of just in the US.

They have Juan Pablo,so they think they will attract more attention and a bigger fan base.
They need to have a cup race @ Kentucky Motor Speedway instead of Mexico..............
They can attract more there than in Mexico..................
