We do all the medical grunt work for doctors who sweep in just to diagnose a problem then turn the animals over to us to do all the yucky stuff and they take all the glory and money! We are nurses for people with a lot of hair. We basically do everything accept actually cutting open the dogs and doing the surgery. Cleaning, holding, walking, suturing, prepping and cleaning up after surgery, catheterizing, medicating, kenneling, Keeping them alive while the doctors sleep during the night shift in an animal ER, CPR, and yes if you don't have Kennel techs then we pick up poop too. Not sure about California, but if you want to be certified, it takes about 9 months, or you can just learn hands on if a vet will take you on as a handler and train you to tech. That's much easier. Don't expect to get rich doing it, and the burn out rate is usually 7 yrs. It is a fun rewarding job, but it will also tear your heart out over and over again. Most techs love the job and animals, but hate the people they work with. Most of the people I worked with had either been doing it way too long and had lost the passion, or were cruel animal abusing A holes, or just never had the passion and had no business working around animals and doctors who start out great, but change and get greedy. These type of people will eventually spoil the job and drive a really great dedicated tech out after 5-7 yrs. Good luck hope you can last.

Great question!
It seems as though many folks here state that they are Animal Care Technicians (or some variation of that career) as the source of their answer, so I'd like to see those folk's answers to this question.

I'm really not sure. Because there are many here from different countries It is difficult to know what a Animal Care Techinician is.

It may be Vet. Tech here is the USA. I'm still thinking what a "vet nurse" is.
