Why do I feel pain in my calf muscles after I run a little? I didn't feel anything in football or wrestling when I had to run a he** of a lot more...I can even see veins on the right side of my left leg now!! I've never seen them before..I think. Anyways, why does it hurt so much now? Even if I rest for a little and then run like 100 feet I pretty much HAVE to stop...Should I ice it or something?

John, I checked out the "varicose veins" and it's definitely not it. I just see small blue veins and they're not popping up or anything...I think its normal, I seen them before after exercises.

No, I don't think I have varicose veins because I just put it in there just to make sure, I don't really have any of the symptoms of varicose veins. After I ice it for a second, I don't even feel pain for a while. Should I just do "RICE?" Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevation? I mean should I do it before I get it checked? I don't really want to waste my time and I don't think it's that serious.

You may have overworked a muscle , pulled a muscle which is painul and takes some time to get better. You should ice it for approx 15minutes every 1-2hours for the ice will decrease swelling and inflammation. You can also take Ibuprofen-comes in 200mg capsules and OK to take up to 600(3) mg daily and can take 2caps at a time 400mg. The only way to have a pulled muscle gt better is to rest-no running-for every time you do you are reinjuring it. Also before you do anything in the AM do some light stretching but stop if it hurts-never tdo anything when it hurts for will cause injury to get worse. I suggest you go to your family doctor or Orthopedic MD(not Osteopath but make sure is a MD and NOT a chiropractor either) and have a XRay taken for thats the surest way to determine exactly what it is-you do not want to fool around or assume its something since a neglected injury can affect your mobility.

You may be perfectly fine, but I suggest seeing a doctor about it. If you notice veins where they weren't noticeable before, you may have a venous insufficiency (meaning your veins are having trouble bringing blood back up to the heart). It can cause pain, and there are treatments available to help this, but you won't know unless you get it checked out. It can also be indicative of a more serious problem in some cases, and even if left alone, venous insufficiency can get alot more life-threatening with time. Just get it checked out to be safe!

Oh, and varicose veins do not always pop-up, so you may actually have them.

Billy, that sounds a bit like varicose veins, and that's serious. Get the leg checked by you GP immediately.

You probably have shin splints. Stretch very well (at least 15 minutes) before running, and avoid hard surfaces like concrete. Running on tracks shouldn't be bad if they are nice ones, but if it is bothering you a lot, run on grass or soft dirt. You won't run as fast, but it will be easier on your legs and give them a chance to adjust to the running. Avoid the sidewalks and roads though if at all possible... if not try to run "softly" and build up the distances. Your legs will stop hurting after a few days of constant running.

You might have torn a muscle or sprained a tendon. Ice the area but if it still hurts after a few days, go see a doctor to make sure that it's not something serious.
