Generally, if you ask a dozen people this question, then you get a dozen different answers. It all depends on how much you can afford, how much you are willing to spend and what the purpose of the car is.
The best cars are generally pricey. Names like Mercedes and Volvo come to mind. It really comes down to what is best for you. In the past twenty years, I have owned several different makes and models of cars. Each of them had something to offer. I would suggest checking Consumer Reports site for information on cars in your price range and in the styles you prefer.

For Under 1000 bucks? Toyota With a 22R motor. More money? A BMW X5 or an M5.

anything toyota or honda. just read consumer reports and see how they fared compared to domestics on average. now i`m not saying domestics are really bad i drive a pontiac firebird 1999 with only 70,000 miles. That`s pretty good. It also depends on maintenance & toyota and honda are excellent. Gas milage is another thing to consider. Good luck but do a little research first.

I think Toyota or Lexus are the best cars on the market today. I own a Lexus with over 100,000 miles and it runs like new! Now Lexus is more money.......and if money is a factor then by all means get the Toyota........Toyota makes Lexus so how can you go wrong? BTW...................maintenance is minimum

My Opinion? The best car is the car you don't have to take a loan out to buy. If you have to finance it...it isn't the car for you.
