Go and have a look at your local shelter, mutts are much better dogs than breeded ones in many ways and even if you disagree there are often many dogs of certain breeds at shelters too.
Dont rush into this but get some books and really look into caring for a dog, they are hard work.

I'd have to say maybe wait till you have more time to spend with your dog before you get one. A puppy will take alot of time and patience and its not fair tot he dog if your gone all the time and they dont ahve anyone to love. they do get bored easily and depending on what breed you get will be the outcome of the amount of damage that can be done while you are gone. As for the suggestion of the bull terrier...it is a good dog by far a great family dog too. However, time and training is a MUST for this breed, so is activity, exercise and socialization. so this wont fit into your time schedule. If you want a low key animal for a pet I'd go for a cat. they are affectionate, wont tear up baseboards, couch cushions, ofr the garbage while your gone, they can entertain themselves for hours, and they dont need much training. BUT...since you asked about a dog I would suggest that you try the yahoo dog selector they have in the pt section. you answer a few questions and they give you the best breed for your style. There is a smooth collie that is medium sized...not too much fur ( not long hair..its shorter) and are good family dogs... so you can try that route too. Good luck and think about it!

Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, they are not cheap however, so if money is an object look for a mixed breed of this type. They are not very large and when they get to be about 2 years and older a lot of people claim they have the temperament of a large breed Labrador retriever, however they tend to be more of a mellow lap dog. If money is really an issue, then going to a shelter is a good choice. Or else buy a book on breeds and go through it, when we first looked for a dog that's what we did and we found one that rated every breed and gave you the pros and cons of each type so you could weigh what was most important.

I used to be in the same position. All of the kids in the family wanted a dog, but my parents didn't. If you want, you could take a test on the website below. It asks you questions on what you would use the dog for, how much time you could spend with it, and many other things. You could take it, see your results, then tell your parents what would be a good dog for you. I hope it helps. Good luck! :)

At this point with everyone being gone so much, any breed of dog is a bad idea.
Wait a couple years until there is more time for a dog.

Don't get a dog if you don't have time to spend with it and train it especially while it's a puppy...any dog if untrained will be a pain in the butt...
