Hiya Marseille,

There are many, many good lines of paint out there - all the nationals (Sherwin, ICI, Ben Moore, PPG, etc) makes very good coatings - if not the best, they're usually good enough for most applications...

In my experience, the absolute best paints - in terms of application and durability - are manufactured by regional manufacturers...Graham Paints (from Chicago, now owned by Muralo Paints), Muralo Paint (east coast), California Paints (east coast...I know, you'd think it'd be from California given the name and all), Harrison Paints (Ohio) and there are several others...

Due to the raw materials economies of scale, regional manufacturers cannot compete with the nationals on a price per gallon basis, so they must make their products perform better. Even though this typically results in a higher price per gallon, most often times the higher quality actually results in a lower cost per square foot per year due to greater spread rates, less time needed to apply and longer lasting finishes.

Almost all manufacturers sell a good enough quality of paint capable of meeting the needs of the average homeowner...Far more important than the quality of paint - to determine a successful paint job - is the amount and type of surface preparation conducted prior to painting. Consult your local independently owned paint dealer for best recommendations of both product and necessary surface preparation procedures.... Places like Home Depot and Lowes carry decent quality products but rarely do they have the experienced personnel to walk you through the proper steps to ensure a successful job.

For brushes and rollers, everybody has their own opinion on which brand is best - The main thing to remember is to buy quality, it doesn't pay to "save" on cheap covers and brushes. The amount of time, energy AND paint you'll save by using better quality tools will more than pay for themselves. Most paint stores are going to carry Purdy, Wooster, Corona, Elder-Jenks or some other quality line - again, let your independent dealer recommend a good brush and make him/her explain what makes it better and worth the extra $$ (Personally I prefer Corona Brushes)...

I hope this information is helpful to you - good luck on your projects.

Ric

Exterior Paints

Note: The single most important factor in painting is preparation. I don't have an article on exterior painting preparation, procedure & considerations here because such write-ups are available many other places, such as, hand-outs at your paint store or this site or this one or this one or other links given at the end of the main home repair page. You can find a recommended how-to book on house painting at the bottom of this page

I don't know what to think about that respected, nationally known, consumer product rating magazine's paint ratings. They are very different every time a new rating comes out. I try to summarize the '93 and 2000 ratings further down so, you can see for yourself but, this table gives some examples of the scatter of top brand paints:

Paint

1993

2000
Pratt & Lambert Accolade Very Best Below Average
Benjamin Moore Middle of 28 paints Very Best
Sherwin-Williams High Low

With this kind of scatter I'm about to conclude their specific paint ratings are pretty meaningless. If their explanation for this scatter is, "Paint companies change their formulas accounting for the differing results." I say, it takes 5-10 years to test them and to report results. If the paints are changing while the test is going on, by the time the test results are available you can't buy the paint that was tested anyway.

Best paints -- California Fresh Coat Velvet (flat), Glidden Endurance (semigloss), Pratt & Lambert Accolade Eggshell (flat) and Glidden Endurance Satin (low luster) and , Glidden Spread-Dura (gloss) [a best buy], Glidden Spread-Dura Satin (low luster) [a best buy]

Worst paints -- Glidden Evermore (flat), True Value Weather All (semigloss) McCloskey Multiuse (low luster) , ALL Benjamin Moore paints.

Note: Care must be taken to select exactly the right Glidden paint. Some are rated best, some worst.

I've used everything from Ralph Lauren, Behr (Home Depot) , American Tradition (Lowe's), Sherwin Williams, etc. to Martha Stewart (K-Mart). I love the colors Ralph Lauren has to offer, but I always have Home Depot mix their own paint to the RL recipe. It saves a LOT of money. I can't see that much difference in quality, although there is a little.
As for brushes, you get what you pay for. Period. Cheap brushes will lose bristles. Rollers are task specific. I prefer to paint nearly everything with rollers and sponge painters. I don't like painting with brushes, because I hate brush marks.
I guess you can tell I've done a LOT of painting!!
Hope this helps!

The rollers made out of lambs wool hold more paint and you can reuse them many times. Purdy brushes are very good. It will last as long as you rinse good and never use with polyerthene. You will pay more, but they will last. If your like my husband and can never find anything, don't bother to spend the $ lol.
