Usually once you are hypothyroid, you have to take thyroid meds for life. The important part of this is that you feel well on your current treatment. If you don't, then its up to you to look into why. There are many reasons why one doesn't feel well when hypothyroid. They could be undermedicated because of the TSH test or they could be on the wrong thyroid medication.

As a healthcare provider I can tell you that there is not really anything you can do. If your thyroid is not functioning as normal it is not going to get better. You will need to take Synthroid the rest of your life. The amount of medication you need can change, so you will need regular blood tests to be sure you are getting the right dose. Your thyroid hormone levels are involved in quite a few functions in your body, so be sure to take your medicine (always on an empty stomach) and get your blood tested regularly.

You need to be tested regularly until your TSH gets normalized and stay on that amount of synthroid to keep symptoms away. You need to be on meds your entire life, there is nothing else you can do to help your thyroid.
