Don't let the dozos here scare you or spoil your fun.

I find it rather sad that your parents will give you 4k but will not bother to spent time with you.

I think that if you want to travel, travel.

I've never been to LA, but I did give you the link for a reason. It is perfectly ok for somebody your age to stay in a youth hostel, especially when you got written permission by the parents.

My brother went with a few friends from Germany to Prague when he was 14 and it was alright. (He only regretted the hangover.) The distance was about the same as LA - random place in CA. Plus he had to deal with a foreign language too. (And hookers. And booze. And drugs. And .. everything a 14 year old should not deal with!)

For all that it is worth, go to LA. Just be smart and stay away from trouble. Don't wave all the money around you so that you don't attract attention and keep a low profile. If people ask, you are 16, turning 17 and you got about 300 USD to spent in LA.

You should also go and visit sites such as tripadvisor or www.virtualtourist.com to check out which areas in LA are safe to go to.

Addition:
Reading through the posts on tripadvisor, I find that the hostel in Santa Monica is in a very safe area that it easily explored on foot.
Why people warn you that going to LA means coming home in a body bag, I fail to comprehend.

4k each?!!!

Where in California, how far can you go? Do you have to spend it all? Is it that easy? How much time do you have to plan? Is a grand and fabulous party out? Had too many?

When you say that your parents don't want to be involved does that mean no to a house party, or no to anything they'd have to sign for? I am sorry.

What a fortunate "problem" there are so many places where most 15 year olds hope they'll have a meal on their birthday.

Dang, what are we having for dinner?

Give some of what you've got to some organization that is trying to mend the relationships of parents and children. Give to children in the hospital who can't afford to have their parents by their sides.
