Cats will often scratch the floor or the wall near their food to "cover it up". In the wild, cats often do this to protect their food from other animals that may find it later.

Domestic cats still have many of their wild counterparts natural instincts. They will cover their tracks as best they can and that's why they bury their urine and feces and when they scratch around the food bowl they're just trying to hide the food.

I have my kittens food in a separate closet and when ever I feed him and he is done eating he will do to the closet door and start scrating it. I believe he is trying to cover it up (AKA hide it from others). I do not know why but that is what they do.
