Coffee itself does not stunt your growth, but the effect of the caffeine can to some extent.

As you are growing, most of the growth occurs when you sleep. This is one of the many functions of sleep, and one reason that young people should get as much sleep as possible.

Caffeine, the primary psychoactive compound in coffee, is a stimulant, and delays the onset of sleepiness. Now, in the ideal world where you can stay up until you are sleepy and get up when you are rested, this would not be a problem. Unfortunately, school starts at the same time each day, whether you have a full eight hours of sleep, or just four. As a result, you get up before you have had a chance to be fully rested, and before your body can do all the things it needs to do, like build bones and muscles.

Repeat this too often, and your growth will be delayed. Delay too long and you will not be able to catch up on your sleep and your lost growth.

That coffee stunts one's growth is an "urban legend" or a "fish wives' story". No it does not stunt growth. For proof: go to WebMD.com and search "caffeine" for its physical properties and physiologic properties. Stunted growth is not one of them.

Personal testimony: I started drinking coffee when I was 10 years old. I have developed normally and I stand 5ft 9in. tall.
