what is the academic parts like? it takes great mental toughness, but where do the smarts come in besides the dive phase and the third phase..is there alot of things you are tested on throughout BUD/s such as tests (written etc.)? Looking at videos of BUD/s, i see the guys in phase one and 2 and 3 just get whooped physically, but where and when do smarts come in play?

if your smart enough to get into the program, your smart enough to get through it.

most smarts come into play on figuring live action tactical situations, during training, any stupidity will show then.

All of the tests and obstacle courses and evolutions that the BUD/s classes do daily requires great amounts of physical, mental, emotional courage and strength, as well as brain smarts. To be able to solve a problem as a platoon (or a boat crew in the SEALS case), they need great smarts and know-how, and especially military experience. The Navy sailors who enter BUD/s training have all been in the Navy for a while.
Smarts are in play the whole time in any military training.

Its SEAL*

If you have a high enough ASVAB score to get in then you will do fine on the test. And you say besides 2nd and 3rd Phase is there much your tested on, well that's 2/3 of the program. You have to be smart to be a SEAL, but you don't have to be a rocket scientist.

Bottom line: if you can get into BUD/S the tests will be the least of your worries.

They go into more detail of their training for the MOS that they have. A Medic, would spend more time and detail in the medical field, as well as cross train and have a good working knowledge of at least two other MOS type jobs.

Not only are they the toughest physically, but also very smart. You will find very, very few of them will say " I am a Seal". Its the way they walk, talk and act that shows their confidence and abilities.

My best friend is retired and spent the last 9 years as a seal. He works as a PA with the Medical Group and has shown old dogs some new tricks in medicine.

You go to your A schools before entering BUDS training. You should already be trained in your rate before going to BUDS. You are going to BUDS to learn a new job. They teach you different stuff than your actual job in the Navy. All Navy schools are taught at the lowest level of the class so everyone can understand anything that is taught. Being a SEAL is a work in progress. That is why you are on teams, your shipmates train you as you grow with the team after you learn the basics in BUDS. You don't have to be smart, just able to learn.
