The problem with BMI is that it is generalized not specialized. Generaly the population is nowhere near their ideal BMI. Everyone is made differently. Whether you are a ectomore, endomorph or mesomorph will determine your musculature and fat mass. So don't go by BMI. Are you healthy? Do you get sick often? Do you get injured often? Are you happy with yourself? if you have positive answers to these questions then forget about your BMI and just live your life. but if you are truly trying to gain weight then eat 1 to 1.5 grams of protein for every pound of bodyweight you have daily and lift weights for 30-45 minutes a day 3-5 times a week, never do the same bodypart twice within 72 hours and get between 7-9 hours of sleep at night.

Drink a gallon of milk a day - for the protein, and work your biggest muscle groups - legs, back, shoulders and chest once a week. Do squats, deadlifts, and bench press - also known as 'the big three'. Go look at hardgainer.com

Eat 20 oz of chocolate every day. make sure to put lots of sugar in your tea/coffee. Drink 12 cans of regular coke. Put mayo on everything you eat. A pound of ice cream every day is a must (you can choose the flavor you want) Eat a lot of butter and lots of bread. Drink olive oil. Eat as much cheese as you can. Talk to your doctor if you are really that concerned about it. 19-24 is a statistical average and doesn't include all body types.
