I work as an EMT. I have responded to calls about kids in cars alone. These are the rules I believe every child caregiver should follow. If you get out of the car for any reason you should have a set of keys for the car on you. Kids have locked parents out acidently, and it can get ugly trying to get them out. Never get far emough from the car that you can not reach it in 5 seconds (what if one of them hits the gearshift and the car starts rolling)and never get out of sight from your kids. If someone wants your car or your kids you need to be able to protect them. It is a pain to drag them in every single store, but thier safety is sooo worth it.

Of course everyone will say that it's a bad idea. And it probably is. However, I know what it's like. I only ever leave my kid in the car if I'm 1. at a gas station I frequent a lot. There are only three in my area that I do this at, and most of the employees and patrons are familiar to me. and 2. I get the parking spot right in front of the door. I always take my keys out and lock the car and I stand sideways at the register so that the car is never out of my site. My son is just 6 months old. When he gets older and can reach the locks and stuff I probably will not do this, but for now I do.

i freak about it i refuse to pump gas on my own if i dont have a card with me so i can stay next to the car i dont even leave my baby in the house alone long enough to run out to my car for something you never know what is out there and for all the moms who say they do it and there kids are just fine just think about the kids you see missing on tv and how there parents say i left them in the car or at home alonet all the time and nothing ever happened until now i thought it was sooo safe. If you dont have a credit or debit card with a major logo for gas pumps get a prepaid card and i promise there is nothing inside a convenience store that cant wait.

It's not safe in Harlem, New York or North Carolina!
I don't leave my kids in the car because I always wonder what if...
What if something happened in the gas station that made me stay longer then just a quick minute?
What if one of my kids somehow messed up my car?
What if they locked me out of the car?
What if I came back and they weren't around anymore?
Kids are unpredictable. Not only that but whether it's hot or cold outside it can be deadly to be inside of a car. It's never EVER safe to leave a child on their own in the car.

I lived in NC at one time, and depending where you are it MAY be safe...But most of the time, other people are not the problem, weather is....I have lived in Louisiana all my life except for 2 years I was in NC.Every year here we have at least one person leave their kids in the car "for only a minute" and the child/baby ends up being killed from the heat.If the child is old enough to work the doors, and be trusted with a key in the ignition so the air can be on,as long as you are doing somthing quick,it should be fine...Make sure they keep the doors locked and know to blow the horn if someone aproaches him or her.Im thinking 8+ would be fine after taught exacty what to do.

Nope, I never leave my kids in the car alone. Here in IL, a lady got a ticket for leaving her 4 year old in the car while she ran into a store for a bagel. She thought it would be quick, her good luck that it was a cop and not a kidnapper who noticed.

Never leave your kids in the car. I read an article that a mother and father did that and someone Jacked their car! He took the babies and every thing. luckily when the baby cried he freaked and ditched the car, But what if someone steals the children? My parents did it in the 80's with us ( I am from SC), but the world is a scary place. Just b/c you live in a small town you shouldn't do it... Crazies can drive THROUGH a small town.

Food for thought. A lady went into a store, left her two kids in the vehicle. The one in the back, got out of her car seat and somehow got her head/neck stuck in the window and couldn't get it out. A passerby, noticed this, released her and went to call paramedics. The mother returned, drove off (none the wiser) and hours, later the child died. (I think she was two or three yrs old)
I guess it's up to you to decide how safe your child is in the vehicle. Here in Canada, it is illegal to leave children in the vehicle alone, fines are given. Time seems to fly by while your waiting in line so be smart and make the right decision.

yes, as long as I can see the car at all time I don't mind leaving them in the car. I lock the doors and take the keys with me and they stay buckled and sit quietly and wait for me to get back. If I'm going into a store to shop I take them with me though.

No, I don't. I pay at the pump for gas. I've considered it before when I run into drop off the check for the water bill, but in the end I never have. I know in my neighboring state of Washington its actually illegal if the kids are under the age of 12.
