has it ended up costing more? In other words do you think that the government contracts are really saving or costing us?

The question is pertaining to when the military down sized and the supposed amount of money the politicians claimed it would save.

I made an error. The question is, is it costing us more or are we really saving with the down sizing.

YES, I think it's cost the taxpayers TRILLIONS !!

I served from 1985-1999, so I caught the middle of President Reagan's 600-Ship Navy... and left at the end of the downsizing.

If we "saved" all that money from the downsizing... where did it GO ? We didn't save anything, we (Congress) simply reallocated the funds to various other pork-barrel projects.

Yes, it IS amazing that NOW for Iraq, we have to CONTRACT companies at incredible prices to do such simple work as truck-driving... that we have to extend everyone's tours rather than having a large enough military to allow a reasonable rotation... OR to have just sealed Iran, Syria, and the Saudis OUT of Iraq while we got them up and running.

Old shipmates tell me that half of the instructor billets that used to be open to us are now held by civilian contractors making 3 to 10 times as much as they do

One of my friend in the military told me that the truck drivers in Iraq from the United States make 10 times more money than the soldiers who protect them.

Even the contracted soldiers make 10 times more money.

What do you think?

xtrax hit it right on.

when i was in the Navy, i was an electronic tech working on subs. i worked with a civilian and we had the exact same job duties responsibilties and everything. but he got paid 3 times more than me, which didn't include overtime, in which he got paid time and half and me, well i had to just suck it up.

so, downsizing save more? it does when its downsizing in the right places.
