very difficoult to explain. because literally it can means little wolf, but i think is not its real meaning.
i am sorry becouse i don't know the english word to translate, but lupino is also a kind of fruit similar to a broad bean, with a yellow skin and a pulpy orange pulp, with a floury taste that is relly characteristic and some kinda etnich in italy, often selled in tapered boxes by itinerant vendors, usually during the festivity or in the summer, is also the basic story of a famous romance, by giovanni verga named 'the malavoglia' that tell about a family who tried to improve their economic condition trading a lupini's cargo, but they lost everything and that will be the starting of a tragedy.
this surname is usually used in lombardia ( the district of milan) and lazio ( the district of rome) if you are interested in discoverig where is used in usa, try this site, i think is amazing

I can't tell you for sure, but it sounds like the Latin for wolf (lupus).
