I don't get it. You don't know the local rules of the road and in a lot of countries its more expensive to rent, and if you get in an accident you could go to jail? I'm American and this is one of those things about Americans I just don't understand.

The problem with hiring a car with driver(dvlping country) is often they charge you too much-means it would be more expensive for you to hire it with driver than rent a car itself. Good thing about travelling is exploring the country you visit and their lifestyle or culture. Once you decide to go to one certain place you must prepare yourself t by reading about the place in guide books or online.Once you arrive you could get a map of the city/town you want to go and the direction so you will not get lost. Just make sure you have your medical/life insurance and you will not go to jail if you not doing something bad/crime.

Well, there are those crazy tuk tuks in Thailand that take you where you don't want to go and lie like rugs (although I still won't drive in Bangkok . . . Phuket, OK but not Bangkok )
And Mexico is no problem driving . . . and who can afford a driver 7 days a week ? Renting is cheaper in Mexico besides, try getting a taxi Out of Xcaret !

I'm gonna keep this question in mind untill I have had some experience. But, if I'm not speaking the language of the one who's driving me, I'd rather get to know a place by doing the driving myself.
But, again like I said I am going to keep this question in mind when I do have that experience.

I sure wouldn't. I want to spend my time sightseeing, not getting lost. I'm also American and don't understand.
