Pinkeye (conjunctivitis) is caused by a virus, bacteria, an allergy or a chemical irritation. It is very easy for an infected family member to pass it onto others in the family, so they should be very careful (don't share towels, wash hands frequently, etc.)

It is a virus and caused by bacteria. You can pick up bacteria just by touching something. If your eyes happen to itch and you rub them and get bacteria in your eye you get conjunctivitis or pinkeye. It is called pinkeye because the white part of your eye becomes inflamed, pink and red. Itching is awful, and you can take over the counter Benedryl for that. The doctor will give you an eye ointment to get rid of the virus.

Conjunctivitis may be triggered by a virus, bacteria, an allergic reaction (to dust, pollen, smoke, fumes or chemicals) or, in the case of giant papillary conjunctivitis, a foreign body on the eye, typically a contact lens. Bacterial and viral systemic infections also may induce conjunctivitis.

conjunctivitis is VERY communicable. Hang around someone with it and touch something they touch, and you might get it.
