East fix and not exspensive. Keep the paneling in place if it is solid and straight. Simply prime it white an paint it to the color of your choice. No need to tear it down or spend the money and time covering it with wallpaper or even more wood. I did that to my living room and it came out great. Good luck in your decision.

They have all kinds of decorative panels now. I have two different types, similar colors in my dining room. Hey, I have always been a painter-as in no panelling but this looks elegant. They are 4 by 8 sheets and you put them up with panelling nails so you'll need a light weight hammer, like a tack hammer. Be gentle these nails bend easily. If your walls aren't square don't get a plaid or stripe, it will show in the corners. Go to Lowes or Home Depot and look you'll be shocked and you CAN paint your existing panelling. Just wipe it down with a deglosser.

There is a paneling that is covered with a plastic. It is decrative but looks more like the material used in travel trailers. When installing it there is a nailing strip that coverrs the joints. It is sold in 4X8 sheets. Anything else you use will look rustic. Drywall sucks becasue of the dust generated in finishing. There is no finishing with the plastic covered paneling.

New paneling. Go look at Home Depot or Lowes and you'll be amazed at how far paneling has come. It is also very easy to install. My husband and I repaneled an entire 4-room basement in our first house. We were in our 20s and had never even painted. It looked great and we were able to sell our house for more that we had planned. If you don't want to repanel. You can paint over paneling or wallpaper over it with that thick, nubby wallpaper.
