Hello, my cat has a bit of a problem. A few years ago I cut the tips of my cat so she wouldent claw at the furniture and claw at me when I tried to give her a bath. Ever since her claws have been really flaky and break apart. She doesnt bleed unless I try removing the flaky parts of her claws myself. Usually they will just fall apart. Her claws are really dry too and her claws just keep flaking. I don't know what to do, we thought about getting her de-clawed but its going to cost us a fortune since it will cost money for the de-clawing and the vet would also have to remove the debris in her claw. Any ideas on how to fix this? Its mostly a problem with her front claws. The claws on her feet grow back pretty normal though.

Also, taking her to the vet costs us some money, I'm only 16 so I don't know how I'll get her to the vet until my dad can get enough money. She does meow whenever I try to clip the the broken part of her claw.

My vet says to leave them alone, but whenever I do that they never grow back, whenever I clip the flaky claw it starts growing back but then it gets dried up again and then the same thing happens. My vet never said anything about diet defincency(sp?)

To Ms. S: Thats what I've been doing. By my cat always meows like shes in pain whenever I try clipping it. I don't like to see my kitty cry like that. Any other suggestions?

Also, I don't always have to clip it, sometimes I can just peel it off because its that easy. They just peel off sometimes, but sometimes it hurts her.

the best way to solve that is to stop clipping. as long as you clip, the claws will separate like that- they grow in layers, and if the tips aren't there the layers won't hold together. let them regrow and give the cat something to claw on. the return it to the store because the cat decided to use something else....

whatever you do though, don't declaw. it's very cruel and not good for the cat.

As for baths, most cats clean themselves. If yours has short fur, it's completely unnecessary. part of why people like them as pets so much- a good return in love for just a little food and attention.

I agree with the others about the claws peeling and your cat needing a scratching post.

When I was young and dumb I had my adult cat de-clawed around the time we got a new kitten. Not only did she get a horrible infection from the surgery but she couldn't defend herself from the adolescent kitten. One day she got out and never came back. I was heartbroken. She was out side with no defense against dogs or other cats.

I will never de-claw a cat or even a kitten again. It is so unnatural. I imagine it must be like having your fingers removed. Don't worry about your cat, relax and enjoy her.

The claws normally peel so don't worry about that. But you do need to provide her with a way to shed them. A scratching post if she is an inside cat should work fine. Take some old carpet and tack it to short dowel nailed into a heavy wood base. Show the cat what to do and she should be fine.

I doubt that the problem was caused by the clipping. It sounds more like a diet deficiency. What does your vet say?

Cats' claws are supposed to be that way - they grow like onions, and the outer layers get shed. That way, they can always be razor sharp - loosing the outer layers leaves a very fine point.

Please don't declaw your cat - it's inhumane, and often causes far more problems than it solves. Just continue clipping her claws - she'll be fine. :)
