Tradition and maybe pride.
I think quite often people do it out of ignorance.
I will talk about people who have some kind of relation with God.
Because they have that relation, they feel that it is a stamp of approval from God. So they believe that they must be right on most important issues (some probably think that they have nothing to repent of, because they now have the Holy Ghost, and He would not fill them if they still had things to change in their lives).
They do not understand that the Holy Ghost was given to help us, by teaching us what the Bible says, to strengthen us and to help change us.

I think the problem you face is that people understand things differently and the same sentence can be taken in different ways by different people. With that said, other times it is simply the fact that somebody gets stuck on one scripture that says something and it may not really "jive" with the overall scripture but they get stuck on it. Other times, they like to overlook it for thier own desire.
Some examples:
Romans 7:2-3 says:
For example, by law a married woman is bound to her husband as long as he is alive, but if her husband dies, she is released from the law of marriage. So then, if she marries another man while her husband is still alive, she is called an adulteress. But if her husband dies, she is released from that law and is not an adulteress, even though she marries another man.
Some people will say the preceeding verse clearly states that a man should not marry a woman who was previously divorced and her husband is alive, right? BUT, what about if a man marries a woman who was previously divorced and then becomes a Christian and reads this verse in 1 Corinthians 7:10-11:
To the married I give this command (not I, but the Lord): A wife must not separate from her husband. But if she does, she must remain unmarried or else be reconciled to her husband. And a husband must not divorce his wife.
So what should th man do? he can't divorce his current wife but he is committing adultery! You will hear SO MANY different interpretations of this sort of stuff and in the end, here is what matters:
Colossians 2:13-14
When you were dead in your sins and in the uncircumcision of your sinful nature,God made you alive with Christ. He forgave us all our sins, having canceled the written code, with its regulations, that was against us and that stood opposed to us; he took it away, nailing it to the cross.
and 1 Peter 4:8
Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins.
In other words, the message is simple... we are sinners. God loves us. He gave His Son to die for us. Those who believe are given the gift of salvation. We need to love all people - especially those that fall into ruts and sin!!
Be blessed!

There's notably two parts being played in the God Shew:
- "their part": God is evil(law) spoken of: imperfect "part"
- "your part": God is (grace) glory-fied: perfect "part"
http://www.godshew.org/TheirPartYourPart.htm
It's always "allegory" about law vs grace compare-i-son, no matter whether it's allegorized as image vs likeness, them vs us, sacrifice vs mercy, division vs peace, high vs higher, etc.
Many shall come...to DECEIVE...and shall deceive many.
That's why the higher exhortation: "be no more children",
Because "children" get tossed to<->fro by law<->law.
Jerusalem below is in bondage(law) with her children.
Which (law/grace) things are an allegory": Galatians 4.

The GRACE of our Lord Jesus Christ with you all. Amen.
