It is just some peoples way of improving themselves or hating some attributes about themselves and improving on it.

A tan looks sexy and brings out muscle tone. I asked some Thais about this, and they said they prefer white skin because it's more beautiful, not for the sex appeal. They say it looks cleaner and people of higher class have white skin (because they have servants to hold umbrellas for them and they don't have to work the field).
I think it's also social. In Thailand, the Asians with white skin get treated better than the one with tan skin. If someone stole from a store, the person with dark skin is the 1st to be blamed.

I don't know either. Everyone wants what they don't have. I'm white and for a while I thought I NEEDED to be tan as a teen. Thankfully, I got over that and appreciate the skin I was given. There is beauty in all races and skin colors. If we all looked the same, how boring would the world be?

I think people just want to fit into a crowd of they perceive as cool. I was raised in the south, with the "old south" mindset and I am proud of my white heritage and wouldn't change it at all. I am milk white and my husband thinks it's gorgeous! A lot of this wanting to be different comes from living in the here and now mindset of young girls.

Tanning helps fade freckles and hide darker veins, especially in legs and faces. So, to have a more smooth appearance, tanning is a quick fix, but has long term effects, like wrinkles, sun spots and even skin cancers.

Darker complected people aren't used to having creamy white skin, like most Americans, so the use of bleaching kits make them seem more exotic in a native land.

In short, people are so unhappy with being "generic". So they try to make themselves into someone new. They want to be special and new to their friends and new contacts, so they change what people always see first, the outside.

like the answerers above said,
the "grass is greener on the other side"

however, its the more traditional asians that prefer to
be lighter in skin color (perhaps it symbolizes purity
and sophistication?)

the rest may not care as much

i like tan whites, since sometimes pale white is not always
attractive

People always think that the grass is greener, they don't realise that what they have at the moment is probably the best. Us humans are a strange bunch... you never see a lion in the jungle trying to be a zebra...

Its kind of STUPID! that the asians or phillipines want to be white cause their skin is already WHITE! not dark or purple!
about the white people wanting to be tan, well i guess they feel more attractive that way!

It's not hard to understand, there is a negative steryotype against very pale caucasions and there is a negative steryotpye against very dark skinned asians.

Who said that Asians want to be white? Sounds like you have been hanging around the wrong people. And who cares...Sounds personal to me.

Know that expression "The grass is greener on the other side..." ? That sums up while people want to be something they are not. Like white kids wanting to be black. And straight men wanting to be metrosexual. etc.
