I have a very smart minature Docshund (sp?) These are these very short "hot dogs" that you sometimes see. She is VERY smart. If we give her a greeny treat she will go upstairs and open the closet door, open the suitcare and hide the greeny under the clothes, close the suitcase and leave. She is VERY smart, but doesn't use it for tricks or games. They are hard to train because they are so smart. They are almost too smart to do tricks. My dog will go into the trash and frame our golden while she's seeping by putting the trash all around her. She is MAD smart. She has so many tricks and she knows that she wont get in trouble because she is so cute. She CAN do many tricks. We taught her to "dance" basically walk and stand on the first day we got her. So Doxies are Really Smart, But almost Too Smart. Also they are great ompanions and they love to cuddle, and play. My dog is a very fast runner too. But she mostly likes to cuddle on your lap.

My Mini Schnauzer is so darn smart. He does a lot of thinking, planning and plotting (to get treats). Maybe this breed is not as small as you'd like. But they are the right size to lay in your lap. They weigh around 13 to 20 lbs. Mine gets groomed about every 8 weeks in warmer months but in winter I just trim around his eyes and brush him every week. They don't shed at all and are pretty hardy.
They are good around kids if they are around them as a puppy.
They're always ready to go anywhere with you. They are far from lazy but not as hyper as, say, Russells. This is my second Schnauzer. I'm sold on em. My daughter has always had Chihuahuas and they are too temperamental/aggressive.
My Sis has a Cavalier King Charles...sweet, happy but she does shed a lot. I have met lots of small mixed breed dogs and they are usually very good natured. Good Luck

Pembroke Welsh corgis, Jack Russells, and Papillons are all smart small breeds. Poodles are also very high up there, but usually only standards as miniature and toy poodles are not, but standards are the size of labs.

A Chihuahua. They are small averaging between 2-10 lbs. But my favorite are the teacups which typically get no bigger than 2-3 lbs full grown. And they are VERY smart and eager to please which makes them easy to train. Often times you can train them to use a litter box which makes it easy if you have a full time job and will not beable to take them out side off and on all day. Good Luck!!

well i have a Yorkie and a Maltese they are very loving and love people. they also don't shed and for people that are allergic to dogs will not be allergic to Yorkie of Maltese. My Yorkie is 4 lbs and my Maltese is 5 lbs. they eat barley anything, are very cute dogs, i keep there hair short so they don't need a lot of maintenance, and are great around kids as well as adults. they both love to give you kisses and will bug you if you don't give them one when you wake up.
p.s. they are very smart and they never think anything is imposible even though they fit in your hand

A very tough, smart, fearless and indestructable dog is the Cairn Terrier. Toto was a Cairn Terrier.

Chihuahuas and min pins, or even a mix of the 2. I wouldn't buy a mix of any kind, but if you are lucky enough to find one in a shelter, that would be great. Min pins are very hyper so make sure to consider that but they are very, very smart.

Shi-Tzu. Not only are they smart but very gentle. Chihuahuas can be tempermental and high strung. Yorkies have a tendency to develope bad teeth, cataracts and tumors as they age.
