C = Carrier or Cruiser
V= Fixed wing (primary aircraft type)
N= Nuclear powered
Combining C+V+N = Nuclear Aircraft Carrier
G= Guided Misile
CGN = Cruiser guided missle, nuclear powered.
The ships get designated according to primary roles. The CGN typically has a small flight deck for helis and some deck guns. The Carrier has helis and some small deck guns and guided missile launch capability.
